Welcome! I'm pleased to have finished another hand quilted project. This is a made with a pattern from Thimble Blossoms - one I have made before - called <a href="http://thimbleblossoms.bigcartel.com/product/on-a-whim-pattern-148-pdf-pattern">On A Whim</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/25769681352/in/dateposted-public/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="AMH On a Whim Quilt, Hand Quilted"><img alt="AMH On a Whim Quilt, Hand Quilted" height="640" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1479/25769681352_3636ddc91a_z.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rainbow of shades are from the <a href="http://annamariahorner.squarespace.com/">Anna Maria Horner</a> line, True Colors. I had a large piece of fabric from her older Loulouthi line which I used for the borders. The white background pieces are simply a white sheet from Ikea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/25257728174/in/dateposted-public/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="AMH On a Whim Quilt, Hand Quilted"><img alt="AMH On a Whim Quilt, Hand Quilted" height="640" src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1472/25257728174_b3631b18a7_z.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The backing is my favourite...VOILE! So soft and cuddly. The pieces are ones I have collected from Anna Maria Horner and from <a href="http://www.tulapink.com/">Tula Pink.</a> And, as I have mentioned, the quilt is completely hand quilted. I used a rainbow of threads that I had, DMC perle cottons in size 8 and Aurifil cottons in size 12. It's the squishiest and snuggliest.</div>

How do I put pictures in, again? :)<br />
<br />
Here is an actual finish after 7 months! A quilt for a teenaged nephew. Parson Gray can be relied upon to produce <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/search/label/curious%20nature">manly but elegant fabrics</a> perfect for boy quilts. The latest line, Katagami, is what I used for this twin sized quilt. Scroll down for quilt stats!<br />

<b>Thread</b>: Aurifil 28 wt in Grey (for the top) and Navy for the back. (Yes, it worked for machine quilting! I wasn't sure whether this thicker thread would work, I usually use a 50 wt, but it gives a nice bold stitch line a bit reminiscent of <a href="https://www.google.ca/search?q=sashiko&rlz=1C5CHFA_enCA561CA561&espv=2&biw=1242&bih=922&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwir_Jiav9zKAhWl74MKHZHpCSgQsAQIJg">sashiko</a>. Happy Canada Day from our Canadian cabin in the woods, all my crazy Canuck kids and my latest Canada inspired quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made this with a maple leaf quilt block pattern that finished at 9" square, a bundle of fat eighths of Crazy for Red by Minick & Simpson, a few fat quarters from Midwinter Reds (also Minick & Simpson) and some red French General pieces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It finished at about 63" square and I bound it with Kona cotton solid in Chinese Red. The quilting I did on my home machine using Aurifil 50 wt in 2325, which blended nicely with the taupes in this colour palette.</div>

Yes, indeed, more <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2015/04/i-spy-baby-quilt.html">scrappiness</a>, more <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2015/03/economy-block-baby-quilt.html">economy blocks</a>, more baby quilts. I have A LOT of scraps I am working on making into something prettier and more useful than a rubbermaid tote full of fabric pieces - however lovely those individual pieces may be. These are my two latest projects with the scraps! And they are both <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/CoraHandmades">for sale in my shop</a>!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Welcome to my entry in this <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/bloggers-quilt-festival/">Spring 2015 Blogger's Quilt Festival</a>. (And please excuse the far from Spring-y photo! This quilt was photographed and gifted at Christmas time.)<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16214838551" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="426" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7512/16214838551_ebc967769d_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">All the fabrics in this king size quilt are from Kansas Troubles by Moda and I used the </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Farmers-Wife-Sampler-Quilt/dp/0896898288" style="text-align: justify;">Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt book</a><span style="text-align: justify;">. I made a few tweaks, adding setting squares and triangles to make the blocks larger, and so setting alternating blocks on point.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8599/16216754165_f3433f7383_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" border="0" height="427" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8599/16216754165_f3433f7383_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">This quilt was made as a gift for my mother and father and took me about 3 years! I really enjoyed putting the blocks together, it was like an interesting puzzle every time. However, I tend to like chain piecing and letting my mind wander, so this took me a long time to do and I didn't alway choose to do it as it was a brain bender and not the meditative calm of chain piecing and simple patterns. (I quilt to relax!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16030596919" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7492/16030596919_82f6a24015_z.jpg" width="427" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;">Then, I quilted this myself on my home machine! Here is a<a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2015/01/farmers-wife-quilt.html"> link to my original post </a>about this quilt if you would like more information. Enjoy all the rest of the entries in the Blogger's Quilt Festival! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm actually making a large project with my pile of True Colors from Anna Maria Horner, but after cutting it all out I had enough scraps to make a little baby quilt. So I did that first! :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love, love, love the backing: Clippings from Anna Maria Horner's line Loulouthi, and doesn't that print from Dowry make great binding? The white background prints are ones I had in my stash that make those rainbow colours just pop. I do love a happy quilt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a pretty baby quilt I decided to name Paris in the Spring when I landed on the Eiffel Tower backing fabric for it hiding in my stash. I started with a few pieces of Lillybelle fabric by Bari J. for Art Gallery fabrics, some aqua and pale blue solids and one little pink piece of fabric from 3 Sisters' line Paris Flea Market. Et voilà!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I quilted it with the wavy stitch on my Bernina (otherwise known as stitch number 4) and a pale pink Aurifil 40 wt thread. Finished dimensions are 35" by 43".</div>

This little cuddly one is made with scraps of solid Kona cottons that have been building up around here. I love making log cabin blocks and I am rather partial to the courthouse steps variation I've used in this quilt. The sashing is Kona Oyster. The backing is a nice soft red flannel from Riley Blake. I've used my usual Aurifil 50 wt threads for piecing and quilting. The finished dimensions are 33.5" by 37".</div>

<br />
Ok, ok, ok. I said the next economy block quilt I made was not going to be scrappy. But here I am. It looks a lot like <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2015/03/economy-block-baby-quilt.html">the one I just made</a> last week, doesn't it? But I started with 3.5" inch squares in the centre, rather than 4.5" and spent a little more time fussy cutting. I love the littler blocks. I love the American Jane backing and other American Jane fabrics and scraps that I used throughout the quilt. This one finished at 31" by 38" and is for sale in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/228582986/i-spy-baby-quilt">Etsy shop</a>!Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03801281699265356460noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123935594131028339.post-1585905241192621912015-03-26T15:02:00.001-06:002015-04-03T09:59:32.595-06:00Economy Block Baby Quilt<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A little scrappy quilt I just completed. I have to admit, I struggle a bit with scrappy. It may seem like a "quilter's sin" but I do. I like congruous. I like a lot of harmony and I like fabric lines. I like scraps in <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/search/label/rainbow%20quilt">rainbow arrangements</a>, though! </div>
<br />
Anyways, I DO like the economy block and you might see this block again here. In matchy, matchy fabrics, haha! And I DO like this quilt. I can't resist it's crinkliness and sweetness. It is a quilt after all, and a quilt means LOVE.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What can I say? I had a craving for nice and simple squares in a rainbow of colour. I cut piles and piles of squares at 4.5" each from my stash and scraps. Backed with flannel and machine quilted in straight lines, both of these are so cuddly and such a bright shot of joy. These are now <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/227361279/rainbow-patchwork-baby-quilt?ref=shop_home_active_2">for sale</a> in my <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/227363364/rainbow-burst-patchwork-baby-quilt?ref=listing-shop-header-0">Etsy shop</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to share some <a href="https://instagram.com/coraquilts_carla/">Instagram</a> pictures, as my little son joined me one day when I began these quilts and sweetly drew his own charm quilt designs in my notebook, and then helped be a quilt "holder" with his bigger brother so I could share my work in progress on Instagram.</div>

Here is my hand quilted <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/04/william-morris-tree-of-life-quilt.html">William Morris Trees of Life</a> quilt. Finally done! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This quilt is special for many reasons. Shall I tell you a few? Way back in 2012, I went to Paris with my husband and two oldest sons. It was an amazing, amazing trip.</div>
<br />
Before we left, I, of course looked up whether there were any quilt shops in Paris I could get to. I was very excited to find one called Le Rouvray just a few blocks from our apartment (which was fabulously also a few blocks from Notre Dame Cathedral - oh my goodness, I loved it). THEN, on my birthday just a few weeks before we left, my sister in law gave me the book you can read a bit about on the <a href="http://www.lerouvray.com/history/p3.html">Le Rouvray website</a> (it is now out of print).<br />
<br />
When I got to Paris, I saw the shop had this fabulous antique quilt hanging up made with Tree of Life blocks. There was a pattern for a similar quilt was included in my book and since I had several William Morris fat quarters (I was thinking about his Tree of Life tapestries...) It came together.<br />
<br />
Then I decided to hand quilt it. Well, that took a long time, but I enjoyed every minute.<br />
<br />
Sadly, Le Rouvray is now closed. But here is a picture I took of the outside of the shop. You can just see the Tree of Life quilt that inspired me through the window.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16126688687" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2 by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7478/16126688687_8af0fe3ea7_b.jpg" width="535" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, I have <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/01/sunshine-and-showers-baby-quilt.html">made this quilt before.</a> But I think it was worth it, as they are very fun to make. I sold the first one *twice* over the Christmas holidays (yes, I really did) and needed to make another one for a customer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16310740941" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2 by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7488/16310740941_e0c3fc51d9_b.jpg" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The 1.5" strips, as you can see, are half "low volume" from my stash, and half bright rainbow colours from my scrap collection. I sewed them together in a log cabin fashion and ended up with blocks 5.5 inches. I do love log cabin quilts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16311599942" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2 by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2" height="426" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8629/16311599942_a255552275_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But, does anyone else get confused when sewing log cabin blocks? I seem to need to do them all in a short span of time, or I forget. I like the nice staggered blocks of colour, but I often end up starting to sew them incorrectly so that there is more like a square of colour with wings. (See <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/01/sunshine-and-showers-baby-quilt.html">my previous post</a> on the subject.)</div>

Oh, it is so squishy and soft. So bright and happy. I might have to make one for myself one day! Incidentally, as soon as I began this quilt I was invited to join posting pictures of it with folks also making scrappy log cabin quilts on <a href="http://instagram.com/coraquilts_carla/">Instagram</a> using the hashtag #scrappylogcabinqal, which you should definitely check out. And thanks for visiting me!</div>

<br />
<br />
Hey everybody!! I finished the Farmer's Wife Quilt this past week! Here it is in all its giganticness in my driveway, being held up in -20 degree weather by my husband (6 feet, 1 inch tall) and my 19 year old son (6 feet, 3 inches tall) and standing on blocks of wood.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16216754165" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8599/16216754165_f3433f7383_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt was conceived in 2011 while on a trip with my sister to Seattle. We stopped in a quilt shop, we stopped in a book shop and I found a jelly roll of <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_Perennials.pdf">Kansas Troubles Perennials</a> and a copy of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Farmers-Wife-Sampler-Quilt/dp/0896898288">The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt.</a> The colours are my mom's style and I was itching to try the sampler quilt - so it made a great reason to get started on a quilt for her. Obviously. And much more fabric than a jelly roll later, plus a few years, here we are!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16030910947" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="640" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8676/16030910947_58932d41dd_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I managed to quilt this behemoth on my little home machine (which has quite a small throat space) by doing it in two, separate horizontal parts. I joined the top pieces then sewed the backing together by hand and carefully quilted over the area right down the middle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16214838551" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/16214838551_ebc967769d_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Astonishingly, I didn't get any puckers - which means that I must have been helped by a quilting fairy. (I was totally prepared for failure as events leading up to this quilting were decidedly not smooth. I reversed the direction of the two pieces, which meant that I quilted right to the edge of the WRONG edge on one piece. Which meant I had to pick out the quilting in about a two dozen different spots, re-quilt farther back from the edge, which meant I had to bury threads on the starting and stopping spots of the re-quilted sections - about 2 dozen sections as I said - and then go back to the side I left un-quilted along the edge and quilt that section. ALSO, while pressing a fold in the cream muslin backing to prepare it for hand stitching the pieces together after the quilting was done and the top was joined... I scorched it brown with my iron!! It was right smack dab in the centre where one might not ever see it, but I still needed to fix it and ended up making a 3" by 4" patch that I hand stitched over top of the scorched area, and then requilted over.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/16030596919" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Farmer's Wife Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Farmer's Wife Quilt" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7492/16030596919_82f6a24015_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Anyways, I am VERY pleased with how it turned out. And so is my Mom! And my Dad even picked up the Farmer's Wife Sampler book and looked at it while I was stitching down the binding over New Year's at our house and we chatted about quilts and quilt history and how they are made. So that was fun! When can I start another one??<br />

Happy 2015 everyone, and here is my look back at the quilts I finished in 2014. I was not as prolific as in <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/12/a-quilty-look-back.html">2013</a>. And not NEARLY as productive as <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2012/12/some-quilts-of-2012.html">2012</a>! But since I started "serious" quilting in <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/p/my-quilts-2011.html">2011</a> with the beginning of my blog, I have made, um, several quilts. Here's to another quilty year!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(PS. I included my <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/10/bloggers-quilt-festival-fall-2014.html">Swoon quilt</a> in the mosaic twice to fill in a blank spot. I think it earned it...)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just popping in to share a little baby quilt that I just had to make. I wanted some pretty stars to quilt and I had: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>A sweet little <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/pre-cut/konareg_cotton_sunrise_palette/">charm pack of Kona cottons in a "Sunrise" colorstory</a>...</li>
<li>Yardage of a fun and colourful print called "Birds of Norway" by Michael Miller which seemed to pick out lots of the shades in my little charm pack...</li>
<li>Just enough Kona Oyster solid...</li>
<li>And a drawerful of colourful perle and Aurifil threads to play with.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a tutorial found <a href="http://www.littlemissshabby.com/2014/01/not-quite-a-sawtooth-star-block-tutorial/">here</a> but I did have to do some reducing as it calls for 5.5" squares as the centres of the stars and I used a 5" charm pack. But it was very easy and this block is very forgiving as your points "float" and probably won't get cut off when you sew it to the other blocks, unless you do something very weird.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, as you can see, I hand quilted around each star and then machine quilted around each star. I bound it with Kona Cerise (cut to 2" - my new normal) and it was done!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
For this pattern, I was inspired by Camille Roskelley's quilt "Coming Home" in her book Simplify - which I also used <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2012/07/a-christmas-in-july-post-arent-i.html">here</a>, but with smaller corner pieces. The quilt is quite simply 5 inch charms with 2.25 inch white squares sewn to the corners. I just started pulling fabrics from my stash and was thrilled when I had everything I needed to finish this quilt in a weekend and get it to its recipient, a dear person in need of some comfort, as soon as I could. I even had backing (half of an Ikea duvet cover)! I never have backing!<br />
<br />
Anyways, it finished at 56" by 65", it's quilted in an allover meander on my machine with Aurifil colour 2325 50 wt thread. I experimented with cutting my binding strips at 2" this time rather than 2.25" as I usually do. I love it! The binding is exactly the same width on both sides of the quilt! I will be doing the same from now on. I happen to be partial to a wood grain binding, not sure why, but I have bound about 5 quilts now with wood grain prints.<br />
<br />
Isn't it a great colour palette? My son helped me out and named it "Apple Autumn". I was thinking something like "Indian Summer" but I think "Apple Autumn" is just the right kind of juicy and sweet name.<br />
<br />
Ok, off to stitch a label and make a quilt delivery...Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03801281699265356460noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9123935594131028339.post-26770670511203303762014-11-08T19:07:00.004-07:002015-03-27T00:19:25.196-06:00Happy, Happy, Happy!I received an email this afternoon from Amy Ellis at Amy's Creative Side, host of the Blogger's Quilt Festival! My quilt <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/11/08/bloggers-quilt-festival-winners-8/">was a winner</a> in the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/10/24/bloggers-quilt-festival-hand-quilted-quilts-4/">Hand Quilted Category</a>! Hooray! Thanks to any of my friends and blog followers out there who cast their little vote for me. <br />

Welcome to my blog and my entry into the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/10/24/bloggers-quilt-festival-hand-quilted-quilts-4/">Hand Quilted Category</a> in the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/bloggers-quilt-festival/">Fall 2014 Blogger's Quilt Festival</a> at <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/">Amy's Creative Side</a>. I present to you my king size, hand quilted, Swoon quilt for your consideration, and hopefully your enjoyment....ta da!</div>

<br />
If you follow me on Instagram or here on my blog, you will have seen <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/search/label/swoon%20quilt">this quilt</a> before. If you have been watching VERY closely, you will remember that I <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/07/the-swoon-quilt-is-done.html">postponed washing this epic mass of quiltiness</a>. Not sure why I did that. I premonition of evil, perhaps?* Well, folks, I've washed (and dried) it. And here is a close up of the results...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15236684190" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3929/15236684190_c721c025e6_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, nothing evil in *this* picture! Just mounds of soft and squishy, beautiful fabrics, textures and stitches on my bed! Would you believe my first experience touching with my own hands the exquisite smushiness all over hand quilting produces was with own hand quilted quilts? I live in a virtual world, people.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15236621249" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" height="448" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2943/15236621249_2ed898388a_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Shall I tell you a little bit about this quilt? I began with a well known pattern by <a href="http://www.camilleroskelley.typepad.com/">Camille Roskelley</a> called <a href="http://thimbleblossoms.bigcartel.com/product/swoon-pattern-142-pdf-pattern">Swoon.</a> The blocks in the original pattern are 24" square each. I reduced mine to about 16.75" square. I used Essex Yarn Dyed Linen in Flax as background fabric, and used my little collection of Denyse Schmidt prints.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15420400061" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3928/15420400061_709e497a6b_b.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've used prints from several Denyse Schmidt collections in the quilt. You'll see one print from Katy Jump Rope, several from Flea Market Fancy, Shelburne Falls, and some from Hope Valley. The binding is from Chicopee and the large scale blue peonies on the backing are from Greenfield Hill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15236781249" style="clear: right; font-family: 'Crimson Text'; line-height: 24.6399993896484px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15236781249_468999e5e8_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final dimensions are 107" by 90" and it fits nicely on my king size bed. I added the border of 3" square scraps to use up all that pretty goodness, and make the quilt larger. The border was not original to the pattern. I do love a scrappy border. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15431762515" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3929/15431762515_e1a09b3fd9_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; direction: ltr; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">And as I mentioned above (um, a couple of times, I'm so proud) I hand quilted the whole quilt. This wasn't the first quilt I've used hand quilting in. There was </span><a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/08/field-study-scout-quilt.html" style="text-align: left;">this one</a><span style="text-align: left;">. It was a lap quilt and I quilted it very minimally with big perle cotton stitches in several straight lines. And <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/10/scrumptious-baby-quilt.html">this one</a>. A baby quilt. And just as an accent on a few others. This Swoon quilt was a bit more of a challenge!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; direction: ltr; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/15423160572" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" height="416" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2950/15423160572_5c02d70b56_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I learned quickly that hand quilting across seams is tricky. I had originally intended to quilt a line around each star and each outer ring...and...well, it wasn't a fully formed plan. As you can see, I ended up quilting the inside of every piece of every block, except for the narrow points in the ring, where I did stitch across seams and "united" the two pieces (you can see in the block above, in those orange "points" in between the blue sections).</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3833/12910486403_a27b265010_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Hand Quilting Progress on the Swoon" border="0" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3833/12910486403_a27b265010_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">This photo above was taken while quilting was in progress. For thread, I used primarily Aurifil thread in a 12 wt. This is a rather thick thread but not as thick as perle cotton which is an 8 wt (which I did use in a couple of blocks). I used a variety of colours and just matched them to the block I was working on. If you could look closely, you would see orange, aqua, stone, green, brown, blue, coral and white threads in the quilt.</span></div>
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3833/12910486403_a27b265010_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3833/12910486403_a27b265010_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="DS Handquilted Swoon Quilt" border="0" height="426" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2949/15423140282_3f83f93f4e_b.jpg" style="text-align: center;" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the back. I didn't have enough of the lovely blueberry Greenfield Hills peony fabric, so inserted panels of a multi-floral from the Shelburne Falls line. Can you see all the dots of the stitches showing on the back? Don't look too close. I also learned that it is hard to make the back look as pretty as the front does when hand quilting! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img alt="Hand Quilted Swoon Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3869/14601283855_1f1cca383d_b.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This photo was taken this summer as soon as quilting and binding was done, and before washing and drying. And if you want to know how long it took me to hand quilt it, I spent 6 months from start to finish. I figure it was about a block per week, and then a couple of weeks to do the sashing and border.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<i><br /></i>
<i>*Oh! Now to the aforementioned premonition of evil. Go look at the third photo above (the one of the whole quilt on the log wall). See the block in the first column, third one down? The one with the aqua star and orange print? See the discoloured orange squares? Go ahead, and look close, I'll wait.... Hmmmm, right? It seems the navy backing nicely shared its excess dye with *some* of my pieces of orange/red medallion fabric and not some others. (I bought that orange fabric from two separate suppliers, but I have no other explanation). You can see problems elsewhere in the quilt. One star that has the orange/red print (3rd column, second down) was entirely stained with the blue dye, one was entirely NOT stained (upper right corner). There is more: the white flowers in the Katy Jump Rope fabric took blue dye, as did the checked Shelburne Falls print, and the multi- floral Shelburne Falls as well. But the white flowers in the Flea Market Fancy print is as bright as ever! So weird. And yes, I did use colour catchers. Four of them to be precise! But no, I did not pre-wash any fabrics. I have never done so before, and I have never had a problem before this quilt. Anyways... I shared my woes on Instagram, as one does. I received some great and hopeful advice of some product to try. Well, life has been busy and I haven't tried it yet... and I might not even bother ordering it. The little "flaws" are kind of growing on me... :)</i><br />

<br /></div>
I've noticed a couple of things as I'm teaching myself to hand quilt. Like the appearance of my stitches. In general, I am pleased as they are neat and even. But when I look at pictures of antique quilts, the stitches appear (1) tinier and (2) smaller, hahaha! Like just a dot! The way my stitches look with this thinner hand quilting thread better suits perle cotton, I think, as the stitches look a little big to me (see the close up). <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A question: how many stitches per inch do people generally get hand quilting? Mine are about 9 stitches per inch in this quilt. Which calculates out to..... about 27, 216 stitches! (378 squares, 8 inches of stitching per square and 9 stitches per inch? Correct me if I am wrong!)<br />

Before one leaves on another <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/10/photos-of-our-epic-trip.html">an epic camping trip</a>... one needs a new camper quilt for one's RV. Naturally.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This simple, easy to piece, easy to quilt and "perfect to showcase a fun fabric" pattern, is what I made this year for our camper quilt. It is called Easy Bricks, by Amy Smart at Diary of a Quilter, and can by found on the <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/05/easy-strawberry-fields-bricks-quilt.html">Moda Bake Shop site</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used a layer cake of S'more Love by Cosmo Cricket for Moda. I took out a lot of the lighter prints which ended up in this <a href="http://coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2014/05/baby-quilts-for-boys.html">baby quilt</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/13945804859" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="S'More Love Baby Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="S'More Love Baby Quilt" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7390/13945804859_b8e4cbd601_c.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I replaced the lighter S'more Love prints with darker prints that coordinated from my collection. (<a href="http://www.diaryofaquilter.com/2011/05/easy-bricks-quilt-tutorial.html">As Amy did</a> in the pattern, using 2 layer cakes and reserving the light prints for a different project.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I pieced it and quilted it up on my machine using a white Aurifil 50 wt. and it is ready to go for our annual September RV adventure!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first thing one realizes after getting sucked into the siren song of this super cool, modern and unique fabric line is how difficult it is to find a good quilt pattern to do it justice!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think I found it in <a href="http://thimbleblossoms.bigcartel.com/product/red-velvet-pattern-134">Thimbleblossoms' Red Velvet</a> pattern. The perfect pattern to let you show off those big beautiful deer and trees and chrysanthemums....but not too modern where you are just looking at giant squares, or squares in a square. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did leave out several prints (some smaller scale and the paint by number birds), as I want those large scale deer and the fall foliage to shine. And I ended up going with a sampler bundle of shot cottons for the star points instead of what I originally imagined incorporating some of the smaller scale prints for. I think the colours and the added depth of the shot cottons is spot on for this quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I pieced it with my usual Aurifil 50 wt in 2325, and I also machine quilted it with the same threads, but used a light grey on the top thread and 2325 in the bobbin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oh, and you may have noticed I orientated the deer to be looking at you when the quilt is what you might consider horizontal, rather than vertical. That's because it is going to hang on the back of my couch :).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14601283855" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Swoon Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3869/14601283855_1f1cca383d_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hooray! It's pieced, it's quilted, it's bound! But it's not washed and dried yet! Usually that is the first thing I do when I complete a quilt. But I wanted to take some pictures before it crinkles, as I have never made such a large piece with hand quilting, and with linen....I just don't quite know how different it will look! But I will let you know.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14599570924" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swoon Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Swoon Quilt" height="426" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2910/14599570924_12cf02f6d2_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Final dimensions (before shrinkage) are 107" by 90". I have also resized these blocks, you might remember if you've been following me, to about 3/4 the size of the pattern. So the original pattern has blocks that finish 24" and mine ended up at about 16.75" (please don't ask me to explain how that math works! I have no memory how I arrived at the numbers I did, but it worked out.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14578528706" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swoon Quilt Detail by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Swoon Quilt Detail" height="426" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5477/14578528706_78207a5bff_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Piecing this one began in March 2013 and the top was finished in October. I began hand quilting in January of 2014 and completed it at the end of June! It works out to roughly about a block a week plus the borders and sashing in another 2 - 3 weeks. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14414924418" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swoon Quilt Backing by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Swoon Quilt Backing" height="426" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3875/14414924418_f5cb0329f7_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love, love, love this backing I used which is a Denyse Schmidt print, from her line Greenfield Hill. Unfortunately, as is usually the way things go, I did not have enough for a king size quilt and so I stuck in a panel down the middle of a Shelburne Falls floral print which I also love. So yay!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14415130517" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Swoon Quilt Detail by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Swoon Quilt Detail" height="426" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5546/14415130517_9d5c2b502f_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What a joy to look at each of those stitches and feel a bit more connected to them, as each one constitutes a moment in my day, a precise movement of my own hands, a bit of my own concentration to make it just right, and so really... a piece of me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(The size of the quilt is ample enough for our king size bed, but I've pictured it on a queen size bed as it was easier to take pictures in this room.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some wavy line quilting in my usual Aurifil (50 wt in light grey) using a stretched out zig zaggy stitch and my walking foot, plus some scrap-alicious binding...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/1999mobile/14129197081" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Baby Boy Plus Quilt by Carla, on Flickr"><img alt="Baby Boy Plus Quilt" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7376/14129197081_9814b151be_b.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And then I was reminded of another baby quilt I meant to make! Some leftover squares from the quilt above (and some others) went so nicely with a few light squares I had left from a S'More Love layer cake from Moda.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This simple quilt needed a little something special in the quilting department, so I happily chose hand quilting. Not a hard sell to me these days!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some random lines in colourful perle no. 8 cottons and Aurfil 12 wt. cottons and we are good to go. (Haha, get it? Go camping?) Oh, and some wood grain print binding? Yes, please!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

So squishy, so fun to do, so satisfying.... hand quilting. Try it!</div>
