A Jelly Roll Quilt!

I finally finished off this quilt what's been hanging around for a year or so!

I love Lauren and Jessi Jung, the pair that designed this fabric line (called Flora) for Moda. One of my all time favourite lines of theirs is Hideaway, it's so cute. Here is a quilt I made with a bunch from that line last year (don't you love those little swiss houses?):

This one I just finished is made with a jelly roll in a very simple pattern that goes together fast. I just sewed groups of 4 jelly roll strips together, cut those strip sets into squares, arranged, and sewed together with the two borders. The quilting took me the longest (no, that's not right...just deciding what to do with the jelly roll first, and deciding how to quilt it came in a close second for longest stage!)

I decided on an all over free motion swirly, whirly... umm... loopy design. I did feel a little out of control at times, not quite sure which way I was going, and do I now swirl right...or left?? Oh well, I love it anyways. And it turned out much softer than I expected, even with the stitches crossing over themselves so many times. I do love a drape-y quilt.

The backing is half of an Ikea duvet cover I ripped apart. I bound it in some more Flora, a lovely binding print with all those little leaves. As usual, I pieced and quilted it all with Aurifil in a 50 wt., this time in an Ivory.

The final dimensions are 56" by 71", a great size from just one jelly roll plus about a yard and a half for the borders.

A La Maison 9 Patch Quilt Top

I finished this quilt top yesterday. It's just a simple pattern of my own design from a jelly roll. The fabric is from Robert Kaufman and the line is called "A La Maison". I was drawn to the blues and browns in it and the coral reds/pinks. It is quite elegant with the scrollwork and pinstripes, yet sweet with tiny bees and dragonflies in the fabric. The sashing is Bella Snow and the cornerstones are made with Kona Delft. I was at a LQS (1 1/4 hours away from me) on the weekend in combination with a quilt show. The shop had some amazing sales, including a 7-11 sale, where one metre was $7, 2 from the same bolt was $11 and the prices just went down from there! I got a lot of fabric from this sale that I will be using for backgrounds, etc. Including this one I used for the border. It is a reproduction from RJR and Thimbleberries called Sunshine and Shadow. I am loving reproduction fabrics more and more :) Lucky me since that seems to be what my local LQS specializes in. (Yes, I said local local quilt shop, since it is 15 min away).

La Petite Ecole Quilt Quilted

I finished quilting and binding yesterday and pulled it out of the dryer tonight, hence the dark picture. But I love it's crinkliness! I quilted a quarter inch away from each side of each seam and I love how it makes each little square puff up in the middle. Especially the ones with little pictures. Like this bug my littlest son loves to find in the quilt (while I was quilting it, while I was binding it... He'd crawl on me and look for the pictures!)



I used a recycled flannel sheet for batting and some wide flannel from my LQS for the backing. It is nice and drapey and snuggly!

A Happy Weekend

I got started on THREE quilts this weekend! So happy!! This is the only top that is near finished though. I had to share it!!





Made with a jelly roll of La Petite Ecole from French General/Moda and some Essex Linen in Natural. The pattern is "Daisy Chain" from one of the Jelly Roll Quilts pattern books by the Lintotts.

Rural Jardin Pillow

Made with some scraps of Rural Jardin to audition a pattern for a possible king size quilt. This is using a pattern from American Patchwork and Quilting magazine by Lissa Alexander called Granny Squares. (October 2010). Lissa used honey bun strips (1 1/2 inches), but I used leftover jelly roll strips, so my squares are 2 inches finished, rather than 1.
