Rainbow Log Cabin Baby Quilt

This little cuddly one is made with scraps of solid Kona cottons that have been building up around here.  I love making log cabin blocks and I am rather partial to the courthouse steps variation I've used in this quilt.  The sashing is Kona Oyster. The backing is a nice soft red flannel from Riley Blake.  I've used my usual Aurifil 50 wt threads for piecing and quilting.  The finished dimensions are 33.5" by 37".

Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt, Part 2!

Yes, I have made this quilt before.  But I think it was worth it, as they are very fun to make.  I sold the first one *twice* over the Christmas holidays (yes, I really did) and needed to make another one for a customer.

The 1.5" strips, as you can see, are half "low volume" from my stash, and half bright rainbow colours from my scrap collection.  I sewed them together in a log cabin fashion and ended up with blocks 5.5 inches.  I do love log cabin quilts.

But, does anyone else get confused when sewing log cabin blocks?  I seem to need to do them all in a short span of time, or I forget.  I like the nice staggered blocks of colour, but I often end up starting to sew them incorrectly so that there is more like a square of colour with wings.  (See my previous post on the subject.)

I bound this one in a Kona Purple (that is precisely the colour) again as requested by the customer.  It is backed in a soft grey polka dotted Riley Blake flannel.

I've pieced it and quilted it all with Aurifil 50 wt.  The piecing was all done in white (2024) and the stippling stitches in the quilting are white in the top thread and light grey (2600) in the bobbin.

Oh, it is so squishy and soft.  So bright and happy.  I might have to make one for myself one day! Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt

Oooh, I like this one. My first foray into *LOW VOLUME* (for the background!).  I have to jump on the bandwagons, it's the only way I get out.  It was fun to make too, once I sorted out how to construct the blocks the way I wanted to!! Like this:

Back in November, I began with gusto and my blocks startled me when after constructing many, many, they all flipped *themselves* around like this:  The one on the left is whackadoo.  The one on the right is *perfect*.

Naughty little things. Some seam ripping... what am I saying... I just tore those little suckers apart and we were back in business.

And here you are! I'm pleased with the cheerful name I picked. And I think I must be loooonging for Spring, or something.

 

I used a nice snuggly flannel on the back, from Riley Blake's Hooty Hoot line:

  And I went bold with the binding, a Kona cotton solid in....hmm. Not sure. But purple.

  I pieced and quilted it all in Aurifil 50 wt in white. As I do. Hopefully this will brighten further some rainbow baby's arrival, or add joy to a nursery wall (but who would put something snuggly up where it can't be touched...!!)  At any rate, it's for sale in my shop!

 

Hope Valley Log Cabin Finished!

I finished the Hope Valley Log Cabin quilt yesterday. I so love to curl up on the couch and hand sew the binding on. MMMMMM. So cozy. And I LOVE the binding on this one. Would you believe I found some Flea Market Fancy in a fabric shop in Hawaii last month? I was so excited, inexperienced fabric store shopper I am, living in the boonies of Canada. I bought all they had on the bolt which wasn't much, but I got a discount! There were two more prints besides the brown. PLUS. I got some Katy Jump Rope. Yes, I am a follower of modern quilty fanaticism.



Anyways, today is windy and snowy, but my hubby braved the snow to hold up this very long quilt for me to photograph in the dimness. I originally thought to make it for a tablecloth quilt.. but it is so crinkly it won't look right. I used old flannel sheets for batting, thinking it wouldn't crinkle as much as new cotton. Oh well, I love the crinkly look. It adds to the vintage feel I was going for with the Hope Valley and the linen.

As we were walking out to take a picture, hubby asked his usual question: "Who is this quilt for?" And usually they are for me, or us! Is that wrong? A couple of quilts I have parted with after having them with me for several months...I think you know how I feel.

Hope it works out! I'm doing straight parallel lines on either side of the log cabin seams and then across the sashing... Not sure about it but I am pretty committed now! I'm sure it will look great when it comes out of the dryer right???!

Kansas Winter Log Cabin

Completed a Kansas Winter Log Cabin quilt last night.  I used 2 Kansas Winter from Kansas Troubles honey buns, some quilter's linen from Robert Kaufman in natural, backed it with Flannel Days from Kansas Troubles and bound it with Kona solid in Espresso.  This is a Christmas present for my mom.... shhhh!
