American Jane Tumbler Baby Quilt Number 2

American Jane Tumbler Quilt 2

This isn't the first tumbler quilt I've made with the fabulous American Jane fabrics! And it may not be the last! The super sweet simplicity of tumblers are great with Sandy Klop's sweet fabric. This is the one I finished today: I seem to be adding hand quilting to about every little baby quilt I make these days, and this one is no different :)

I made the binding a little differently this time, inspired by one of my favourite places to be inspired: Instagram! A couple of folks, namely @craft_addict and @patchworkplus, were binding their quilts in this funky way, which was exactly like I had been binding so far (see Heather Bailey's tutorial here). However, when it came to hand-stitching the binding down, instead of using invisible ladder stitches, they were using big, visible hand stitches right on top of the binding!

One lady sewed hers to the front and did these stitches on the back, and the other sewed the binding to the back and hand stitched it to the front. This is what I chose to do, I thought it would be fun to echo the line of hand quilting all around the quilt. I used Auriful thread in 28 wt, which was just the right amount of heft.

  2. The tumbler pattern is a great match for American Jane fabric. I have a few charm packs from 3 of her different lines and have never been sure what to turn them into. My favorite part of this quilt is the visible hand stitched binding. So pretty!!

  4. I somehow missed that line. It sure works in your Tumbler quilt. I love the orange border with it too. That is such a nice pic of your family Carla. Enjoy

  5. did you actually slip stitch the binding first, or is the hand quilting the only stitch holding the binding down ???
