Yes, indeed, more scrappiness, more economy blocks, more baby quilts.  I have A LOT of scraps I am working on making into something prettier and more useful than a rubbermaid tote full of fabric pieces - however lovely those individual pieces may be.  These are my two latest projects with the scraps!  And they are both for sale in my shop!

QUILT STATS:

Fabric: scraps from a lot of different collections
Thread: Aurifil 50 wt in white
Backing: top one is from the Florence line by Denyse Schmidt, second one is from Riley Blake
Binding: striped print is from Sabine Reinhart for Blend
Batting: Warm & Natural
Dimensions: 30" by 36" each
Completed June 2015

I'm actually making a large project with my pile of True Colors from Anna Maria Horner, but after cutting it all out I had enough scraps to make a little baby quilt.  So I did that first! :)

I love, love, love the backing: Clippings from Anna Maria Horner's line Loulouthi, and doesn't that print from Dowry make great binding?  The white background prints are ones I had in my stash that make those rainbow colours just pop.  I do love a happy quilt.

This one is for sale in my Etsy shop!

This little cuddly one is made with scraps of solid Kona cottons that have been building up around here.  I love making log cabin blocks and I am rather partial to the courthouse steps variation I've used in this quilt.  The sashing is Kona Oyster. The backing is a nice soft red flannel from Riley Blake.  I've used my usual Aurifil 50 wt threads for piecing and quilting.  The finished dimensions are 33.5" by 37".

Ok, ok, ok. I said the next economy block quilt I made was not going to be scrappy. But here I am. It looks a lot like the one I just made last week, doesn't it? But I started with 3.5" inch squares in the centre, rather than 4.5" and spent a little more time fussy cutting. I love the littler blocks. I love the American Jane backing and other American Jane fabrics and scraps that I used throughout the quilt. This one finished at 31" by 38" and is for sale in my Etsy shop!

A little scrappy quilt I just completed. I have to admit, I struggle a bit with scrappy. It may seem like a "quilter's sin" but I do. I like congruous. I like a lot of harmony and I like fabric lines. I like scraps in rainbow arrangements, though!

Anyways, I DO like the economy block and you might see this block again here. In matchy, matchy fabrics, haha!  And I DO like this quilt.  I can't resist it's crinkliness and sweetness.  It is a quilt after all, and a quilt means LOVE.

QUILT STATS

Backing: Aunt Grace by Judie Rothermel for Marcus Fabrics
Batting: Warm & Natural
Thread: Aurifil 50 wt in 2021

What can I say?  I had a craving for nice and simple squares in a rainbow of colour.  I cut piles and piles of squares at 4.5" each from my stash and scraps.  Backed with flannel and machine quilted in straight lines, both of these are so cuddly and such a bright shot of joy.   These are now for sale in my Etsy shop.
I had to share some Instagram pictures, as my little son joined me one day when I began these quilts and sweetly drew his own charm quilt designs in my notebook, and then helped be a quilt "holder" with his bigger brother so I could share my work in progress on Instagram.

QUILT STATS:
Fabrics: 4.5" squares from my stash and scraps
Batting: Warm & Natural
Backing: Riley Blake flannel
Binding: Scrappy (quilt 1) and Navy Oval Elements (quilt 2)
Thread: Aurifil 50 wt for piecing and quilting
Dimensions: 38" by 50" (quilt 1) and 38" by 38" (quilt 2)

Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt, Part 2!

Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2

Yes, I have made this quilt before.  But I think it was worth it, as they are very fun to make.  I sold the first one *twice* over the Christmas holidays (yes, I really did) and needed to make another one for a customer.

Sunshine and Showers Baby Quilt 2

The 1.5" strips, as you can see, are half "low volume" from my stash, and half bright rainbow colours from my scrap collection.  I sewed them together in a log cabin fashion and ended up with blocks 5.5 inches.  I do love log cabin quilts.

But, does anyone else get confused when sewing log cabin blocks?  I seem to need to do them all in a short span of time, or I forget.  I like the nice staggered blocks of colour, but I often end up starting to sew them incorrectly so that there is more like a square of colour with wings.  (See my previous post on the subject.)

I bound this one in a Kona Purple (that is precisely the colour) again as requested by the customer.  It is backed in a soft grey polka dotted Riley Blake flannel.

I've pieced it and quilted it all with Aurifil 50 wt.  The piecing was all done in white (2024) and the stippling stitches in the quilting are white in the top thread and light grey (2600) in the bobbin.

Oh, it is so squishy and soft.  So bright and happy.  I might have to make one for myself one day! Incidentally, as soon as I began this quilt I was invited to join posting pictures of it with folks also making scrappy log cabin quilts on Instagram using the hashtag #scrappylogcabinqal, which you should definitely check out.   And thanks for visiting me!
